Love Once Lost by Cara Maxwell

The Hesitant Husbands, Book #2

“IT IS REASONABLE TO BE CAUTIOUS; TIME CAN ALTER PEOPLE IN UNEXPECTED WAYS. BUT IT WOULD BE UNWISE TO ASSUME THAT YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT CARRIES THE SCARS OF THE PAST. AND THE REGRETS OF THE ROAD NOT TRAVELLED.”

Cara Maxwell has written a great second-chance romance with a fun espionage subplot!

There are two things I really like about this book in particular.

First, it’s set primarily in Paris which is an exotic locale by most Regency romance book standards. It’s fun to see a hero and heroine somewhere other than England, especially other than London during the season.

Second, I liked that one of the premises of the book is that the heroine wanted to experience the world and travel before she got married… which was unacceptable to her semi-alphahole hero. There is also a cute Mr. and Mrs. Smith kind of interplay going on between Meera and Christopher. A previous reviewer complained that “Meena” (it’s Meera) was an annoying character, but I found the opposite to be true. She’s intelligent and refuses to let Christopher talk down to her or put her in her place, which is exactly how I’d hope a heroine would be. Looking forward to the next book in this series!

“SHE LOOKED LIKE A GODDESS. HER TEMPER WAS UP AND HER DARK EYES WERE POOLS HE COULD EASILY REMEMBER GETTING LOST IN. LOOSE STRANDS OF LONG BLONDE HAIR WERE ESCAPING HER HOOD AND FRAMING HER FACE. WHY WAS SHE SO DAMN ENTICING? HOW COULD HE WANT TO KISS HER AND THROTTLE HER ALL AT THE SAME TIME? HE DECIDED TO FOCUS ON A SPOT ON THE WALL BEHIND HER. THERE WAS A RED BOOK BOUND WITH GOLD STRIPING. MAYBE IF HE DID NOT LOOK AT HER, HE WOULD BE ABLE TO HOLD IT TOGETHER UNTIL HIS BRAIN CAUGHT UP WITH HIS TRAITOROUS BODY.”
